Well, they took about 2.5 inches out of Carson's femur today and holy cow...he felt every bit of it. He was in pre-op, surgery or post-op from 7:30am until 4:10pm and by the time they got him back to his room he was in excrutiating pain for the better part of 1.5 hours. Poor guy powered through.
He's exhausted but drank some smoothie, ate a little and trying to rest. Lost a lot of blood, needed two units toinight.
Tomorrow is day off from Surgery, then Sciatic repair Friday along with other soft tissue repair. We don't yet know if there is enough soft tissue to close the wound, most likely not. They will then need another surgery over the weekend for skin grafting, but a little more extensive, called a flap. Sounds great, huh...
Surgeon today was pleased with the result, but also started talking about the extent of knee damage. He's an ortho guy so that's what he sees. Barrie and I talked to him for 45 minutes today and from his perspective Carson's biggest challenge is the broken and dislocated knee that no longer is held together by anything other than the external hardware. Today, two more holes were drilled into his tibia and two more holes into his femur to move and reattach the hardware device holding his knee together.
A couple photos of tonights xrays, his second day where he was intibated and his external hardware holding his leg together, for the "holy shit" factor.
So from here it all gets pretty technical and we'll share that another time and label the post acordingly so you can decide in advance if you want to read. We are still trying to wrap our heads around it all too.
Right now, Carson is remaining strong, the family is tired and the dogs are confused and a little mad about fewer walks and "where the hell is everyone". But as I write this, we are all in Carson's room (except the dogs) and we are getting Carson's new pain regimine figured out, blood infusion and hopefully a good day of rest before a big day Friday.
