So, Carson’s extreme pain over the last 5 days…we told Trauma on Saturday we thought something new was happening, that it seemed like infection. It was deep pain, fluid seemed like it was building up and nothing else seemed to make sense.
On Sunday I had one Trauma Doc actually respond to me when I told her I thought something was wrong and we need to get proactive with, “Well, what do you think it is?” My shockingly calm response was, I don’t know, I’m just using deductive reasoning pointing to something new. He had new pain, it was excessive, in new locations and around incision or femoral pin extraction sites and white blood cell count was rising.
I don’t want to blame anyone (having a hard time with that) primarily because I can accept that these things can be hard (maybe) to diagnose, but let’s just say no particular proactive action was taken.
So today…(sorry for the grossness), puss literally exploded from one of Carson’s pin extraction sites and oozed for hours and hours. It has been determined today that, wait for it, he has a significant infection in his leg (DUH), BUT…the OR was too busy to get him in today…so tomorrow he goes back in for procedure number 15.
Now, that’s not all. They gave him a massive dose of antibiotics and he’s had an allergic reaction. The reaction is bad.
And then, his IV stopped working. And because he’s been laying in a bed now for 7 weeks and couldn’t drink water today because they thought they would get him into the OR, they can’t find a vein to put in a new IV. So, he can’t get the drugs he needs, his entire body is bright red, he’s not quite anaphylactic (or there’d be a real problem) and now they have the ICU team up here with 4 nurses and an ultrasound machine trying to get an IV in him…in his armpit.
My question…what else can you throw at this kid!? Holy hell…the poor guy.
A friend of mine sent me a Mother Theresa quote weeks back. I might have shared it already, but it’s applicable and it goes (something) like this (only because I can’t find it). “I believe God only gives you the things you can handle. Sometimes I just wish he didn’t trust me do much”. When I shared that with another friend he responded with, "he sure must trust Carson a lot". THAT WAS A MONTH AGO.
Update, ICU team got the IV in his armpit and drugs are now in.
Wish him luck on surgery at 12:15pm MDT tomorrow. Zero clue on the knee...focusing on infection now.
Hospital change...probably, but one, two or three things at a time. And, progress with Washington University today. More on that later.

I am absolutely speechless!
It is so hard to believe that you have to guide these highly educated and experienced surgeons down a path that appears so obvious. We are praying for Carson every day and hoping to get his pain level down to manageable to start. Along with cleaning out the infection he now has. His drive to get through this every day is beyond over the top and quite admirable!
Carson, you are the bravest young man around. Keep up the positive thoughts and we believe you will concur and overcome all of this. Hang in there, you’re doing an amazing job.
Sam and Dawn
WOW…you just can’t make this shit up! Carson is so fortunate to have two parents managing this entire process! Hang in there….sending love and strength always.
